Prof. Anderson S. L. Gomes Visits Berhampur University, Delivers Talk on Random Lasers and Initiates Collaborative Research

The Center of Excellence in Nano Science and Technology for Development of Sensors (CoENSTds), Department of Physics, Berhampur University, was honored to host Prof. Anderson S. L. Gomes, a distinguished physicist renowned for his contributions to nonlinear optics and nanophotonics, on April 7, 2025.

Prof. Gomes, a  Professor of Physics at the Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil, holds a Ph.D. in Laser Physics from Imperial College London and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Brown University. He has co-authored over 300 scientific publications and is a Fellow of OPTICA, a Full Member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, and a member of The World Academy of Sciences. His accolades include the National Order of Scientific Merit at both the Commander (2010) and Grand Cross (2023) classes .

During his visit, Prof. Gomes delivered an insightful talk on “Random Lasers”, shedding light on the latest advancements in random laser systems and their multidisciplinary applications. His expertise provided valuable perspectives to our faculty and students, fostering a deeper understanding of complex photonic systems.

Prof. Gomes also toured our laboratory facilities and expressed high appreciation for the progress and innovations achieved, particularly commending our development of a non-invasive HbA1c monitoring kit. He acknowledged the potential impact of this technology in transforming diabetes management by offering a needle-free, cost-effective solution for routine monitoring.

In a significant step towards international collaboration, Prof. Gomes signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with CoENSTds to initiate joint research endeavors focusing on:

  • Enhancement of the non-invasive HbA1c monitoring kit

  • Development of sensors for mercury ion detection, aiming to address environmental monitoring challenges.

This collaboration is poised to amalgamate expertise from both institutions, driving innovation in sensor technology and expanding the horizons of applied photonics research.

The Center of Excellence extends its heartfelt gratitude to Prof. Anderson S. L. Gomes for his visit, enriching discourse, and commitment to collaborative research. We look forward to a fruitful partnership that advances scientific knowledge and contributes to societal well-being.
